Our consulting services broadly fall into four areas:
Specialised probabilistic modelling of risk. Many clients like to have the in-house capacity to perform quantitative risk analyses and have the resources to train some personnel up to a certain level. However, some problems can be rather complicated or there may be a lot riding on the model being correct and in such circumstances, we provide a specialist service to produce the quantitative risk analysis model. The client usually provides the data and problem logic, which is by far the greatest part of the work, and we construct the model around this logic and data, ensuring that both are appropriate to the problem. This approach is a very efficient use of consultancy time and allows the client to both maintain control of the assessment and improve their modelling skills in the process. Modelling work is frequently carried out over the Internet to minimise travelling time and expense.

Providing advice to clients who wish to develop or improve a risk management approach to their activities. Activities include: helping a client develop a risk policy; establishing a protocol for identifying, analysing, evaluating and managing risks; advising on risk analysis arguments; overseeing the establishment of a risk assessment process; training of management and key staff in the benefits of risk analysis and in carrying out their individual roles in the risk assessment process.

We offer auditing of risk assessment practices and models. We provide an independent auditing service to review a client's current or planned risk assessment process. We also critique risk analysis models and reports, which is particularly useful to clients who need to understand any weakness in their approach, for example when a report may be going out to public review or to a potentially hostile audience, or when a lot is riding on a correct analysis.
Many clients have found it very useful to have their planned modelling approach reviewed prior to committing resources to its execution. We can help a client through a risk assessment by: advising on the most practical approach to the problem, given the availability of resources and data and the goals of the exercise; reviewing the model at the planning stage and at completion, and reviewing the subsequent report for the information it provides, its accuracy and its clarity. This leaves the client in complete control of the process, whilst building up further risk assessment experience, but ensures that any effort is expended efficiently and with the minimum of delay.

Recently, Vose Consulting successfully provided expert witness services or served as a key risk adviser at two WTO court cases in an international dispute and in a US federal court case between the US government and an industry opponent (read more here ). We greatly value our reputation for providing an honest and unbiased opinion. Indeed, the Australian government employed Mr Vose's services in a recent hearing despite having lost a WTO court case some years ago to Canada where Mr. Vose was acting for the Canadian government.

Our client base is very wide, and includes government and business organisations around the world. Many clients compete with each other commercially or represent countries with conflicting interests. We therefore jealously guard our reputation for professional independence. We can only accept modelling and auditing assignments where the client accepts that our findings may not match their hopes. We will not accept any assignment that requires us to demonstrate a pre-defined conclusion.
There is sometimes a hesitation in using an independent consultancy to provide paid advice that will be used in public policy or that will be presented to a public authority. In such projects, the client may instruct us to consult other suitably qualified individuals as the work progresses. In fact, if a novel approach is required to complete the analysis, we encourage the client to seek a second opinion before the work commences to assure themselves and other stakeholders of the appropriateness of the approach. We can also facilitate independent reviews of our work by introducing the client to other suitable experts in the various aspects of the contracted work.
